Output quality for the Dell 1710n is nothing to write home about. Both text and graphics quality are a step below what we typically see with monochrome lasers, but still within an acceptable range. On text documents most fonts were easily readable at 5 points or smaller, some were easily readable at 4 points, and only one highly stylized font needed 10 points. Graphics suffer from obvious dithering and banding, among other problems, but the quality is still good enough for internal business use. Photo quality is middle-of-the-road for a monochrome laser and appropriate for things like newsletters or printing Web pages. The HL-5250DN is slightly better for text and graphics, but slightly worse for photos.
